  • By coincidence I made this picture in the port of Amsterdam (named ''Coenhaven'') on 12-07-1955. At that moment not knowing that I should ever sail on board the ''Willem Barendsz II'' three years later in 1958 (1955/1956 was my last year at the training-college for marine-engineers in Amsterdam). In the picture you see newbuilding ''Willem Barendsz II'' next to her predecessor ''Willem Barendsz I'' (with her new name ''Bloemendael'' and serving as oil-tanker and sometimes going to the Antarctica to deliver fuel to ''Willem Barendsz II'' and after delivering fuel taking in whale-oil back to Holland). ''Willem Barendsz II'' is preparing for her first whaling season 1955/1956. The first whaling season of the ''Willem Barendsz I'' was 1946/1947 and her last one 1954/1955.
